Complete IELTS Preparation Guide for Study Abroad

Everything you need to know about IELTS for university applications — score requirements, preparation tips, and how to book your test.

By Foundation Pathway

IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is the most widely accepted English language test for university admissions worldwide. Most UK, Australian, and Canadian universities require IELTS as part of your application.

What Score Do You Need?

Requirements vary by university and programme level:

  • Foundation programmes: IELTS 5.0–5.5 overall
  • Undergraduate: IELTS 6.0–6.5 overall (no band below 5.5)
  • Postgraduate: IELTS 6.5–7.0 overall (no band below 6.0)
  • MBA/Law/Medicine: IELTS 7.0+ overall

IELTS Academic vs General Training

For university applications, you need IELTS Academic (not General Training). The Academic test includes more complex reading passages and requires you to describe graphs or charts in the writing section.

Preparation Tips

Reading

  • Practice skimming and scanning techniques daily
  • Read academic articles from The Guardian, BBC, or academic journals
  • Focus on understanding paragraph structure, not every word
  • Time yourself — you have 20 minutes per passage

Writing

  • Task 1: Practice describing graphs, tables, and processes
  • Task 2: Build a bank of topic-specific vocabulary
  • Always plan your essay for 5 minutes before writing
  • Use linking words naturally — don't overdo them

Speaking

  • Record yourself answering practice questions
  • Extend your answers in Part 3 — give reasons and examples
  • Don't memorise scripts — examiners can tell
  • Practice with native speakers through language exchange apps

Listening

  • Listen to English podcasts daily (BBC 6 Minute English is excellent)
  • Practice note-taking while listening
  • Pay attention to signposting words ("however", "on the other hand")
  • Be careful with spelling in your answers

Don't Meet the IELTS Requirement?

If your IELTS score is below the requirement, don't worry. Many universities offer:

  • Pre-sessional English courses (4-20 weeks before your main programme)
  • Foundation year programmes with built-in English support
  • Conditional offers that let you resit before the programme starts

IELTS Preparation Checklist

  • 1

Register for IELTS Academic (not General Training)

Book 2-3 months before your university deadline

  • 2

Take a practice test to find your baseline score

    Use official Cambridge practice tests

  • 3

Set a study schedule (at least 4-6 weeks)

1-2 hours daily is more effective than weekend cramming

  • 4

Focus on your weakest band first

Most students struggle with Writing Task 2

  • 5

    Practice under timed conditions weekly

Simulate real test timing for each section

  • 6

Get feedback on your writing from a teacher or tutor

Self-study alone won't improve writing score

  • 7

Book your test date and check ID requirements

Passport must be valid on the test date

  • 8

Plan for a resit if needed (results in 13 days)

Many unis accept late scores with conditional offers

6.5

is the most common IELTS requirement for UK undergraduate programmes
