Foundation Year Explained: Your Bridge to a Top University

A foundation year (also called a pathway programme) is a one-year preparatory course designed for international students who don't meet the direct entry requirements for a bachelor's degree. It bridges the gap between your current qualifications and university-level study.

Who Needs a Foundation Year?

• Students whose school-leaving qualifications aren't equivalent to UK A-levels

How Does It Work?

Foundation programmes typically run for one academic year (September to June) and include:

Types of Foundation Programmes

Embedded (on-campus)

Partner pathway (ISC/INTO/Kaplan)

Run by a specialist provider on or near campus. These are popular at Russell Group universities and offer strong academic and pastoral support for international students.

Independent

Run by standalone colleges. More flexible on entry requirements but may not guarantee progression to a specific university.

What Happens After Foundation?

If you pass your foundation year (usually 50-60% overall), you progress to Year 1 of your bachelor's degree. Your total study time is typically 4 years (1 foundation + 3 degree), the same as a direct-entry student in many countries.
